Fix Windows 10 Search Not Working

May any temporary glitch causing this issue simply restart your PC and check it helps.

Check Windows Search Service Running

The most common reason for this problem could be the Search service. If windows search service stopped or not started at startup, that can cause windows search stop working.

Press Windows + R, type Services.msc and ok

This will open the Windows services console,

Now scroll down and look for windows search service.

If windows search service is running, then simply right click and select restart.

If it’s not running, then double click on it to get its properties.

Here change the startup type Automatic and start the service next to service status as shown image below.

Click apply and ok to make save changes.

Running The Search & Indexing Troubleshooter

Running the Search and Indexing Troubleshooter is another effective solution to check and fix the problem itself.

Open settings by pressing windows key + I together.

Now, Click on Update & Security.

Then Choose Troubleshoot from the left menu.

Click Search and indexing from the right side, then click on Run the troubleshooter.

You will see the “What problems do you notice?” section with multiple checkboxes. Select the suitable boxes prior to clicking the “Next” button to make the troubleshooter recognize the problems and mend it, if possible.

Rebuilding The Search Engine Index

Again, Rebuilding the index can resolve numerous Windows Search issues, Which can seriously improve your Start Menu search box’s performance.

To Rebuild the search engine index.

Open Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Look for indexing options and click on it.

When you open the “Indexing Options,” click on the “Advanced” button to open “Advanced Options.”

Now, below the “Index Settings” tab, you will see a Troubleshooting section.

This section contains a “Rebuild” button.

Click on the “Rebuild” button.

This will help in Rebuilding the Search Engine Index.

After clicking on it, you will see a confirmation message displaying, “Rebuilding the index might take a long time to complete.

Some views and search results might be incomplete until Rebuilding is finished”.

Click on the “OK” button to allow Windows 10 to enable Rebuilding the Search Engine Index.

Note: This step may take a couple of hours for completion of the whole process, but in most of the cases, it is completed within 5-10 minutes or less.

Re-register Cortana

Some Users report re-registering the Cortana process to resolve the issue, and Windows 10 Search started working for them. To do this, right-click on Windows 10 Start menu select Powershell ( admin ). Then perform Command below

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

Re-register the missing apps using PowerShell

After that, close PowerShell and restart windows. On the next start check, windows Search started working.
